Chapter 14
Sizes and grading
Grading turns one pattern into a size range. Each size is the base size plus a small, regular step.
The size chart
| Size | Chest | Waist | Seat | Neck | Across back | Arm length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 46 | 92.0 | 80.0 | 94.0 | 37.8 | 35.4 | 63.6 |
| 48 | 96.0 | 84.0 | 98.0 | 38.6 | 36.9 | 63.8 |
| 50 | 100.0 | 88.0 | 102.0 | 39.4 | 38.4 | 64.0 |
| 52 | 104.0 | 92.0 | 106.0 | 40.2 | 39.9 | 64.2 |
| 54 | 108.0 | 96.0 | 110.0 | 41.0 | 41.4 | 64.4 |
In European sizes the chest, bust, waist and hip grow by 4 cm from one size to the next, and by 6 cm in the larger sizes. Widths across the back and front grow by a little over 1 cm, lengths by a few millimetres. Height is graded separately: a taller figure of the same size keeps the girths and gets longer lengths.
Two ways to grade
- Redraft every size from its own measurements with the same formulas. Exact, and what the editor does.
- Move points of the base pattern by a fixed step per size. Quick by hand; the steps come from the size chart.
