- Cut and markCut every piece with the grain arrow along the selvedge. Mark the notches, the buttons and buttonholes and the pocket placement with chalk or a short snip into the allowance.
- InterfacingFuse light interfacing to the front facings, the front facings, one collar and one stand, the cuffs before sewing anything.
- ShouldersSew the front to the back at the shoulders. Neaten and press the seams towards the back.
- Front facingsNeaten the inner edge of the facings. Sew each facing to its front edge right sides together, from the hem up to the neckline, turn and press. Baste the facings to the neckline so the collar is sewn on through both layers.
- Shirt collarSew the collar pieces round the outer edge, trim the points, turn and press. Sandwich the collar between the two stands and sew the stand top edge. Sew the stand to the neckline matching the notches, turn the inner stand over the seam and topstitch round the stand.
- In-seam pocketsSew a pocket bag to the front and one to the back side seam between the notches and press them outwards.
- Side seamsSew the side seams, pivoting round the pocket bags at the notches. Neaten and press.
- SleevesSew the underarm seam of each sleeve. Run a row of long stitches round the cap. Pin the sleeve into the armhole, single notch to the front, double notch to the back, the top to the shoulder seam, ease the cap in and sew with the sleeve on top.
- CuffsBind the placket slits with the bias strips. Fold the pleats towards the placket, sew the cuffs to the sleeve ends, turn the inner layer over and topstitch.
- HemNeaten the raw edge, turn up the hem and stitch it. On the curved part, ease the hem in or use a narrow hem.
- ButtonsSew the buttonholes where marked on the right front (left front for menswear) and sew the buttons on the other front.
- PressGive the whole garment a final press, with a cloth over the right side.
