How to sew7 steps
  1. Cut and markCut every piece with the grain arrow parallel to the selvedge. Transfer the notches and the marks with tailor's chalk or a short snip into the seam allowance.
  2. InterfacingFuse interfacing to the collar, stand, cuffs, waistband, facings and front edges before sewing anything.
  3. PleatsFold the pleats along the marks, press them and baste across the top so they hold while the waistband goes on.
  4. Side seamsSew the side seams, leaving the left side (or the centre back) open for the zip. Neaten and press open.
  5. ZipInsert an invisible zip, the top stop just below the waistband seam.
  6. WaistbandSew the waistband right side to right side to the waist, fold it over, press and stitch in the ditch from the outside. Add a hook and bar or a button.
  7. HemUnpick the pleats at the hem, turn up the hem, then press the pleats back in.
